Menstrual Hygiene Management in Schools: Gender Equality & Educational Retention

Educational Impact of Inadequate School MHM

According to the Bangladesh National Hygiene Survey, 40% of secondary schoolgirls miss 3 to 4 days of school per month during menstruation. This accumulates to 30–40 missed academic days per year per female student, driving early school dropout and poor exam performance.

The root causes stem from infrastructure deficits: 84% of rural schools lack separate lockable female latrines equipped with internal running water, soap, private changing areas, and hygienic pad disposal mechanisms.

Socio-Cultural Taboos & Gender Disparity

Deeply entrenched cultural taboos treat menstruation as secretive or impure. Many adolescent girls enter puberty without prior knowledge of menstrual biology, leading to severe anxiety and unhygienic practices such as reusing damp rags.

Addressing MHM requires breaking silences in classrooms, training female teachers, and fostering supportive school environments.

Architectural Blueprint for MHM Latrine Complexes

AIDE designs and constructs MHM-friendly school WASH complexes equipped with standardized structural features:

  • Internal Running Water & Basin: Piped water supply directly inside the private toilet cubicle for washing and hygiene.
  • Privacy Screen & Internal Lock: Ensuring complete physical security and privacy.
  • Changing Bench & Hanger Hooks: Providing clean surfaces for uniform changing.

School Pad Banks & Waste Incineration

Improper disposal of used menstrual products blocks school latrine plumbing. AIDE installs on-site brick incinerators connected to cubicle walls for smokeless disposal.

Additionally, emergency pad banks managed by female student clubs supply low-cost sanitary napkins so girls never have to return home mid-day.

Social Behavior Change Communication (SBCC) & Curriculum Integration

Infrastructure must be paired with Social Behavior Change Communication (SBCC). AIDE conducts awareness sessions for male and female students, school management committees, and parents.
