Industrial Wastewater Treatment in Bangladesh: ETP Engineering & Regulatory Compliance

Industrial River Pollution Crisis in Bangladesh

Bangladesh's Ready-Made Garment (RMG), textile dyeing, and chemical industries generate over 200 million liters of toxic industrial effluent daily. Untreated discharge has turned critical river basins — including the Buriganga, Turag, and Shitalakhya — biologically dead with dissolved oxygen (DO) levels dropping near zero.

Severe river pollution threatens aquatic ecosystems, destroys inland fisheries, and contaminates agricultural irrigation sources downstream.

Effluent Chemistry & Toxicological Load

Raw textile dyeing wastewater contains high concentrations of synthetic azo dyes, heavy metals (chromium, cadmium, lead), caustic soda, and surfactants. Typical chemical parameters far exceed environmental limits:

  • BOD5 (Biological Oxygen Demand): 400–1,200 mg/L (Limit: 50 mg/L).
  • COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand): 1,000–3,000 mg/L (Limit: 200 mg/L).
  • TDS (Total Dissolved Solids): 4,000–8,000 mg/L (Limit: 2,100 mg/L).

Biological ETP Technologies (ASP, MBBR, MBR)

AIDE Private Limited provides biological and chemical ETP engineering design, auditing, and retrofitting for industrial clients:

Activated Sludge Process (ASP) & MBBR

Aerobic micro-organisms on suspended carrier media biodegrade organic dye compounds, reducing BOD by >95%.

Membrane Bioreactor (MBR)

Combining biological degradation with ultrafiltration membrane separation produces high-clarity permeate free of suspended solids.

Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) & Water Reuse

With industrial groundwater extraction tariffs rising, textile factories are adopting Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) systems. Combining MBR, Reverse Osmosis, and evaporators enables factories to recover 85–90% of process water for re-use in dyeing operations.

ZLD eliminates liquid discharge into local rivers while safeguarding factories against groundwater scarcity.

DoE Regulatory Clearance & Global Buyer Compliance

Operating ETPs is mandatory for obtaining Environmental Clearance Certificates (ECC) from the Department of Environment (DoE), as well as satisfying international apparel buyer standards (ZDHC, HIGG Index).
